Breaking the Silence is a community-led artistic storytelling initiative dedicated to creating safe, respectful, and culturally grounded opportunities for the children and grandchildren of Residential School Survivors to share their lived experiences through creative expression. While the voices of Survivors have played a vital role in shaping Canada's journey toward Truth and Reconciliation, the experiences of the generations that followed have often remained unheard. Through storytelling, oral history, photography, creative writing, documentary development, and community dialogue, this initiative seeks to create space for those voices to be heard, honoured, and preserved.

Download our Project Concept Overview to learn more about the initiative and share it with your family, community, organization, employer, or anyone you believe may be interested in supporting or participating in Breaking the Silence.

The initiative begins with the Breaking the Silence Listening Circle Tour—a series of community gatherings designed to bring people together in welcoming, trauma-informed environments where stories can be shared, relationships can be built, and creativity can become a pathway toward healing, understanding, cultural preservation, and hope. Guided by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists, and community members, participants will always have the choice to decide if, how, and when they wish to share their story. Every voice is valued, and every story will be treated with dignity, respect, and care.

Breaking the Silence is more than a project—it is the beginning of a conversation. It is an invitation to listen, to learn, and to recognize that reconciliation continues across generations. By creating opportunities for the children and grandchildren of Residential School Survivors to share their stories through artistic expression, we hope to strengthen understanding, preserve lived experiences, and inspire future generations to continue the journey of healing together.

Your story matters. Your voice matters. If you are a child or grandchild of a Residential School Survivor—or if you would like to support this initiative as a partner, volunteer, artist, Elder, Knowledge Keeper, or community advocate—we invite you to join us. Whether you choose to share your story, participate in a Listening Circle, or simply learn more, your involvement can help shape the future of Breaking the Silence.

Together, we can ensure that every generation has the opportunity to be heard.
